Five goslings were reunited with their parents safely thanks to Salthaven after getting stuck on the roof of F Building.

Since the completion of the school year, the past few weeks have been ordinary at Fanshawe until some unexpected visitors made an appearance.

Two geese were spotted on the top of F Building with their unhatched baby goslings.

Linda MacLeod, assistant to the executive director at Student Success, explained that she, along with others in her office, had noticed the nest and eggs before they hatched.

“Tuesday morning we noticed the babies and then called Salthaven on Thursday when we realized that they had no way to get down,” MacLeod explained.

The five goslings were seemingly encouraged by their parents to jump off of the top of the building to the ground. While that may seem risky for ones so small, Salthaven executive director, Brian Salt, said that the goslings would float safely to the ground.

The main issue that prevented this from happening, and caused the goslings to be trapped on the roof, was the approximately one foot lip at the edge of the roof that was too high for the goslings to climb over.

Salthaven volunteers arrived on Friday to rescue the goslings. Heather Cummings, executive director of Student Success, was able to obtain the key to open the window that provided access to the roof. The goslings were guided into a small carrier that was gently lowered down over the side of the roof by a rod and line.

Once the goslings had safely reached the ground, they were released and reunited with their eagerly awaiting parents.

“They [Salthaven] were very calm and very helpful. We all just wanted them to get safely to the ground and Salthaven made it possible for that to happen,” MacLeod said.
