Letter to the Editor: Support for families left out of Liberal budget

Dear Editor,

The 2016 federal budget is doing nothing more for families than leaving a $29.4 billion bill to pay for the Liberal government's out-of-control spending promises.

Families simply can't afford Liberal tax hikes. Unfortunately, the government is cancelling: the Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB), the Children's Fitness Tax Credit, as well as tax credits for post-secondary education and textbooks.

It was the previous Conservative government that reduced taxes to their lowest level in 50 years, with the typical family of four saving almost $7,000. We created and enhanced the UCCA to provide $160 per month for children under the age of 6 and $60 per month for children aged 6-17. We increased by $1,000 the maximum dollar amounts that could be claimed under the Child Care Expense Deduction, starting in 2015. And we introduced pension income splitting for couples with children under the age of 18, as well as seniors.

Conservatives understand that Canadians work hard for their money. Unfortunately, instead of focusing on giving more money back to families, the Liberals are making families pay more by raising taxes and playing politics with family benefits.

Sincerely,

Karen Vecchio
