To the editor,
Re: "Former Fanshawe teacher expresses concern over part-time rights" published Monday, September 25, 2006.
I wish to clarify that salaries for part-time professors (those that are in class six hours per week or less) are not governed by the Collective Agreement. These employees are prevented from joining a union under the provisions of the Colleges Collective Bargaining Act. The terms of their employment cannot be addressed in any collective agreement, including ours. The Colleges autonomously determine their own wage scales for part-time professors.

For more information on the topic of part-time college teachers, readers are invited to visit www.collegeworkers.org.

Part-time professors are encouraged to confidentially share their experiences with us by sending an e-mail to parttime@opseu110.ca or by calling our Part Time Hotline at 519-453-4342. Darryl Bedford Second Vice President OPSEU Local 110

Re: Tim Horton's Uniform
September 28, 2006

I walked into the Tim Horton's on the other side of town, like I do most mornings and not only was there an extremely long line-up, but the workers behind the counter all looked a bit different.

Apparently employees at the Wonderland Rd North location were issued new, puke-green collared shirt uniforms.

By the time I could order a coffee and get out the door I overheard three other people in line talking about the new uniforms.

“They are so ugly” and “They kinda look like Halloween,” were just two of the comments I heard.

I honestly felt bad for the workers behind the counter.

And here I thought the pleated pants were the worst they could do for their employees who make minimum wage. So next time you are in Tim Horton's give the girls that extra nickel for putting up with wearing those shirts.

Re: Hot dog eating contest
September 27, 2006

Last week I saw posters up all over school and on the FSU website about a Hot Dog eating contest that was supposed to be on September 27 in the Oasis.

I wanted to see good old fashioned face-stuffing and I was looking forward to the free lunch, but I heard it was cancelled because of the “chubby bunny” thing at the Western Fair a couple of weeks ago.

I think whoever cancelled it is being WAY too paranoid.

I'm old enough to decide if something is not a good idea. Oh and has anyone ever heard of signing a waiver?

Next thing you know we will all be wearing helmets 24 hours a day and get permission slips to go to the washroom.

Just pad all sharp corners in the college and call us safe!
