Sand, sun and surf...and school?

Cancun, Cozumel and Puerto Vallarta are all popular Mexican Spring Break destinations for college students to drink away the worries and stresses of the past semester. But this spring, 30 lucky Fanshawe students will be getting a full credit for their Mexican adventures.

Fanshawe General Education teacher, Sheila Chick, is organizing an elective, full credit course from February 23 to March 4 in Mexico. The travel/study course will explore the culture and heritage of Mexico, while students travel throughout México City, Querétaro and San Miguel de Allende.

“A lot of the time we don't get to even know what's going on there and this is a chance to really see Mexico,” Chick said. Students will get the opportunity to visit the Teotihuacán Pyramids, National History Museum, National Palace, as well as many local art exhibitions.

Chick said the course would be of interest to students studying travel and tourism, fine arts, culinary arts, healthcare, architecture and even construction.

The cost of the 10 day excursion is just under $2500, which includes all air transportation, land transportation in Mexico, accommodations, admission to events, as well as two meals a day.

Apart from the education value of experiencing Mexico first hand, the intensive course will also require students to prepare a presentation, keep a detailed journal and write an informal report.

“Learning doesn't just happen in the classroom,” Chick said about the values of experiencing another culture through education.

Chick, who has taught English as a second language for six years at Fanshawe, chose Mexico as the field trip sight due to Canada and Mexico's connection through the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

Chick will be hosting information sessions on Thursday, September 15 and 29 from 12pm-1pm in room A1301 and Thursday, October 13 from 5pm-6pm in E2008. For more information on INDI 1099 — The Cultural Life in Mexico, contact Sheila Chick, General Studies Division, 452-4442 or schick@fanshawec.on.ca.
