Food and atmosphere add up to a winner

Now that you've been in school for a month it's probably about time mom and dad paid you a visit. And in all likelihood while they are here they'll probably take you out for a meal. If that's the case then you may want to suggest the Armouries Grille Restaurant as your destination of choice.

Located at 325 Dundas Street (at the corner of Waterloo), the Armouries Grille is housed inside the Delta Armouries Hotel. It also happens to be one of the more interesting dining experiences one can enjoy. The building was originally constructed in 1905, and it was the location for training Canadian soldiers during the two great world wars. Visitors exploring the building can enjoy the archival photographs, uniforms and other wartime artifacts on display throughout the Delta London Armouries, and the glass elevator ride to the top provides a great view of London. I know what your thinking, what about the food? Let me say this, you won't be disappointed.

The Armouries Grille features a full breakfast buffet seven days a week, the highlight being their made to order omelet station Monday to Friday from 6:30a.m. - 10:30a.m. The ingredients are always fresh and the options plenty. The Armouries is also known for their Prime Rib Buffet Friday and Saturday nights. Need I say more?

For dinner, the Armouries offers a variety of mouth-watering entrees. On my most recent visit I enjoyed the Veal Marseille, encrusted in pecans and drizzled in a light sauce with mushrooms. It was our waiter's recommendation and it didn't disappoint. The meat was succulent and tender, and the potatoes accompanying the dish didn't only look majestic, they tasted wonderful as well. When it comes to presentation the Armouries certainly gets it right.

One of my guests on the evening ordered the pickerel. If you've ever had pickerel you would know that fish bones go with the territory. Needless to say my guest reported there was nary a bone to be found and that the fish was presented skinless, another nice touch. Another guest ordered the salmon special, and it too was flavourful.

The menu also offers up a variety of steaks and pasta dishes, along with chicken and lamb chops. You can also find a variety of salads on the menu and appetizers. But who needs appetizers when upon being seated the table is promptly served a basket of assorted fresh rolls, three types of butter, regular, herbed and a roasted tomato concoction.

My fave however happens to be the fresh roasted garlic bulbs that can be spread onto a roll. Not great for the breath but very tasty indeed.

While all this my sound tempting, I would suggest you try the Armouries Sunday Brunch. I believe it's the best in the city. There is a vast array of foods from a sautéed shrimp station to an omelet station and waffle station. There is a range of meats and you can count on ham and roast beef to be on the buffet along with chicken, but I've been there when turkey was also an item.

There is usually a variety of potatoes, a nice cold buffet section that includes a selection of seafood including cold cuts, oysters and smoked salmon, to deviled eggs. There is also a pasta station cooked to order with a choice of three or four sauces and a host of fresh vegetable ingredients and meats.

The dessert area features a variety of cakes and pies, fresh fruit and usually chocolate dipped strawberries. I suggest you go there hungry, as this is an experience that words cannot do justice. To top it all off there are strolling musicians adding to the ambiance of the water fountains and wonderful smelling food. If you plan on doing Sunday brunch I suggest you make a reservation (519-640-5030) so you are not disappointed.

I've carefully avoided pricing to this point, as you can imagine this isn't your $10 meal place. Depending on what your ordering you can reasonably expect to spend $20 or more for a dinner entree, and about $25 for Sunday brunch. I suggest you avoid alcohol purchases because it will add to your bill. As I said before this place is great if mom or dad is picking up the tab, but will also impress someone on a dinner date, or a nice treat for a significant other. There is also a bar lounge just above the Armouries Grille, but expect to pay hotel prices for your booze. One thing worth mentioning is that there are heart smart choices on the menu and the kitchen will go the extra distance to fit your dietary needs. The wait staff is friendly and personable and adds to the overall experience. At that this restaurant you definitely pay for what you get.

The Armouries certainly rates a five out of five.

My rating 5 spoons
