Fanshawe out-performs Western in Speakeasy violations

Week three of Project Speakeasy IV was just as busy as the previous two, with London city police heavily patrolling areas surrounding the campuses of Fanshawe College and Western, as well as the downtown core.

In comparison, Fanshawe out-performed their Western counterparts in term of charges laid.

On Friday, September 15 alone, in the area surrounding Western, Project Speakeasy officers issued eight tickets for liquor licensing act offences, seven for noise by-law offences and four for highway traffic act violations.

Meanwhile on the other side of city in the areas that border Fanshawe College, police issued 15 liquor licensing act offences, four highway traffic act tickets and 12 noise by-law violations, during the same period of time. Police also charged three students within the trespassing to property act.

In previous weeks tickets for disobeying the public urination by-law were given out specifically to Fanshawe students.

Downtown was dull in comparison, with eight non-students being ticketed.

On Saturday, September 16 project officers laid 38 provincial offence notices, 35 of which were to students and three to non-students in the downtown core.

In total, 50 tickets were issued the entire week under the highway traffic act, 74 for liquor license act offences, 37 noise by-law charges and 15 tickets were issued for other provincial and municipal infractions.

Project Speakeasy, which runs until September 30, aims to crackdown on students who are associated with disturbing residential areas with their back-to-school celebrations. The project consists of a special team of 12 officers, along with additional resources when needed, who patrol and monitor know areas that students reside, as well as the downtown core.
