OCAA Golf Championships being hosted by Fanshawe

A future Mike Weir or Annika Sorenstam may be coming to London in the beginning of October.

The best golfers in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) will be coming to London from October 2 to 4 to compete in the 2006 OCAA Men's and Women's Provincial Golf Championship. The event will be hosted by Fanshawe College at the Fire Rock Golf and Country Club in Komoka, five minutes west of London.

The 2006 Fanshawe squad, led once again by head coach Andy Shaw, features many new faces this season, as the majority of veteran players failed to return to the program for this year.

Included amongst the non-returnees is Matt Tindale who captained the men's team last season and accomplished the best individual results of any 2005 Fanshawe golfer.

Men's Athletic Officer Ernie Durocher said Tindale seized an opportunity that few would pass up.

“Matt went out West,” Durocher said. “He is going to be playing golf near Vancouver, so I don't blame him. It is very beautiful out there.”

Renowned Canadian golf course architect Tom McBroom designed the Fire Rock Golf and Country Club site of the 2006 championship, which is currently in its third-year of existence.

Head professional Jake Norris said he and his staff are looking forward at the opportunity to host the championship.

The Fanshawe squad will be practicing at Fire Rock several times before the championship in hopes of becoming comfortable with the course and subsequently giving them an edge in hopes of obtaining the 2006 OCAA provincial championship.
