President's Perspective: Pres loves email and Haggis

No matter how many emails I get a day, I love to get email. I love regular mail too, but there is something about email and the buzz of my Blackberry letting me know that someone needs my help that makes me just a little bit excited.

I cannot count the number of emails I get from students asking how to get involved. No, this isn't going to be an article on “What you can do to get involved” because if you want that information, you can write to me J. Plus, we give you enough print material that you should be able to find it easily.

This is an email about a student who was looking for a job here at the FSU. He was relatively persistent, kept on top of things. He really wanted to do something new. And he answered my emails. Which was great, because when students don't answer when I write back, I always wonder where they disappeared (now that the campus is going to be fenced in, there isn't very far they can really escape from us.) How could I say no to that? So buddy came out and was a huge help. What a treat to work with. And I know that he didn't know anyone, and everyone else pretty much knew each other. So he made the best of what could have been an awkward situation, and did a fantastic job.

But that wasn't the end of him, after a week of helping at Week of Welcome (WOW); he also ended up volunteering for Shinerama, of which his group raised a ton of money for Cystic Fibrosis research. And again, he was a treat to work with. Even at the end, when he was sitting around with some of the members of the FSU executive, he seemed to fit right in, making jokes, and having a good time. We ended up going out (socially) as a big group that night and dang, it was a blast. I'd share those stories but I have another focus right now.

Now, I know this might sound lame, but whenever I meet new students, I always like to see how well they get along with the executive. Our team has a great attitude and are very easy to get along with. And (irony of all ironies) our elections for Divisional Reps opened up Monday, September 11 and go until Thursday, September 28th. So I like to scout out new students, and see if any would be an asset to our team.

Even if you are in first-year, you can still run for a position. So really, there is no excuse not to do it. We are always looking for good people and we need students who want to make a difference. Many things that we do are going to last long after we are gone, so why wouldn't I be looking for the best?

So, I spoke with him and now he is considering running for Student Administrative Council and we would be lucky to him. If your team is only as strong as your weakest player, and if we have nothing but positive, enthusiastic students, then how can we even be considered weak at all?

The point of this article is that, is you want to get involved and want to do something, don't stop with one email. Actually move your ass and do it. You may be surprised at how much fun you have when you try something new. Because when I write you back, it's because I know you are taking an interest in what the FSU does, and I want to meet you and have you enjoy your time here at college. So write me back, or come into my office. Even when you think something might be uncomfortable or different, that's usually the best type of event. So if you have been looking at posters on the wall, reading your handbook, and thinking about running for council, it's time we saw you in SC2001 picking up your nomination form.
