Even makeup has its limits.

Makeup is a very creative art form and can achieve many different things. It can do something as simple as covering up some redness to the extreme of totally transforming a person’s face. That being said, makeup does have its limits and it can’t do certain things no matter what advertisements say.

Here are some of the top myths and misconceptions about makeup.

Myth: Wearing a darker colour foundation will make you look more tan.

Fact: Wearing a darker colour foundation than your actual skin tone will only achieve one thing, which is make you look orange. If you aren’t looking for an “Oompa Loompa” complexion but more of that beautiful sun kissed look, wearing the right colour of foundation and dusting bronzer on the highpoints of the face is the solution.

Myth: Shimmering matte eye shadows exist.

Fact: “Shimmering matte” eye shadows alone is a contradiction and not a real product. A matte eye shadow is a very flat colour with absolutely no shine at all. A shimmering eye shadow is a pigment that contains very fine glitter to give it almost an iridescent look. If you mixed these two together you would still just end up with a shimmering eye shadow, there would be nothing matte about it.

Myth: Pink tone concealers will effectively cover dark under eye circles.

Fact: Pink tone concealers are great for people who have absolutely no dark circles as it mainly just helps highlight the under eye area. As for people who do have those purple, dark circles, you need to use a yellow- or orange-tone concealer, as this will effectively counteract the purple and blue tones.

Myth: Makeup can completely get rid of pimples or acne.

Fact: Makeup does an excellent job at reducing the appearance of acne but it can’t fully get rid of it. Concealers and foundations can correct the discolouration (redness) caused by acne but it cannot alter its raised appearance.

Myth: Mature women can’t wear shimmer on the eyes or complexion.

Fact: People often think that shimmers will age a woman, however, if they are placed properly, they can actually look quite youthful. Dusting a fine shimmer on the brow bone, the center of the eyelid and the height of the cheekbone can create a lifting effect and make you look more youthful.

These are just a few myths about makeup and I hope the truths bring you more clarity, especially when you are applying makeup. If you have any other questions about makeup misconceptions, email me at thebeautyboys@gmail.com.
