Volunteering at Home County

The 41st annual Home County Music and Art Festival took place July 18 to 20 in Victoria Park. Home County is a fun-filled all ages festival that focuses on catchy folk tunes, arts and crafts, delicious food and an eco-friendly environment.

This year, some headlining acts included Ashley MacIsaac, Whitehorse and Nathan Rogers. The festival showcased local talent as well as some of Fanshawe's very own Music Industry Arts students.

If you're an arts and crafts fanatic, there were many vendors that would be right up your alley! Whether you enjoy decorative art or clothing, there was definitely something for you.

If you're a food lover, you would've been overwhelmed by the selection! Whether you're in the mood for a delicious burger or craving Indian cuisine or maybe your sweet tooth was buzzing and you longed for a frozen yogurt or funnel cake, Home County has you covered.

The great thing about the Home County Music and Art Festival this year was the eco-friendly environment. The festival encouraged visitors to bring their own cutlery and plates. If you forgot, you could make a $3 refundable deposit to borrow stainless steel plates and cutlery from the festival.

Sounds like a pretty great time, huh? That is exactly why I wanted to volunteer at Home County. I got involved with the festival through the Fanshawe Student Union and volunteered every day of the festival as well as the set up and tear down. During the set up, the volunteers helped build the stages and set up other areas of the park. The tear down duties included cleaning the park grounds and putting all the equipment from the stages back into storage.

During the festival I was stationed in the beer tent, which was new to the Home County Music and Art Festival this year. The beer tent was a great atmosphere to work in. Everyone I worked with was very fun and outgoing.

Working in such a great environment made the festival fly by. I worked along side fellow Fanshawe Student, Randi Carey, who gave up her weekend to help out at Home County.

Carey explained why she volunteers. “It's a simple yet effective way to give back. I appreciate what people in London have done for me since I've moved here. To show my thanks, I volunteer.”

Volunteer co-ordinator, Deb Wiltshire also spoke about Home County Music and Art Festival volunteer opportunities.

“Home County Music and Art Festival would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers and thousands of hours they graciously give us while working hard, smiling lots and seeing to every need our guests might have,” she said. Home County accommodates for 200 volunteers to plan and execute the event each year.

Volunteering is very important in college. It's a great way to get out there and network with fellow students and employers. Even if you're volunteering for an event or company that has no relation to your program of study, it's still a great opportunity.

It looks great on a resume, no matter what the event or company. It shows you're a hard worker who is willing to dedicate time to help others.

Keep an eye out for volunteer opportunities on the Fanshawe Career/Co-op portal or the Fanshawe Student Union website.

See you next year, Home County.
