Presidential hopefuls discuss the big issues

The three Student Union presidential candidates had one last shot to impress students at a debate in Forwell Hall on March 6.

Meaghan Bennett, a representative from the LGBTQ community in the healthcare sector, said she hopes to create awareness for services the Fanshawe Student Union offers the student body. “I want people to feel like they are supported and welcome. I want a safe space to be provided for everyone.”

Bennett would like for students to form a sense of comfort with the FSU, in order to increase involvement.

Ashish Mehta, the candidate with a project management background, has a strong belief in the word “hope.”

“My agenda for this campaign is hope; hope for the better life, hope for a better initiative on this campus, hope for the change.”

Mehta said motivation to include students will hopefully yield more student involvement. He said negative outcome from past decisions will be met with listening ears, to find out what went wrong in order to rectify the situation. Collaboration with everyone will help him make a decision.

Matt Stewart, an international graphic design student from Australia, said he hopes to increase the FSU's visibility to the student body. “Visibility to the students means knowledge to the students about what the FSU can offer and what they do for students to get their student life to blossom throughout their time here.”

Stewart advocates a face-to-face approach with students and an open-door policy, allowing students to feel comfortable about talking to FSU executives. Bennett brings her passion to improve quality of life and educating people on resources and support. Mehta knows how to build students up from being a “nobody to a somebody” as he has done here at Fanshawe. And Stewart believes in wanting to serve students by giving back to a community that was welcoming of him in his early days.

Each candidate possesses qualities and strengths of a strong president. Who are you voting for?

Voting opens on FanshaweOnline March 10 and ends March 13.
