Stay sane - take care of your brain

The semester is already ramping up into that super stressful mess of tests, projects, papers and more. Take a break with the Fanshawe Student Union's Mental Health Awareness Week this week.

“The reason that it was started was to help remove the stigma surrounding mental health, and to show students ... that they aren't alone,” said FSU President Adam Gourlay, who is helping to organize the events. “It gives them the resources they need to succeed.”

The week kicks off on January 20 with the Yellow Umbrella Project, a College Student Alliance initiative that aims to spread happiness throughout the halls of Fanshawe. Students grab a yellow umbrella sticky note and share a happy thought. “Write [about] somebody who makes you happy or something that makes you happy on a yellow umbrella and stick it on the wall [in Forwell Hall],” Gourlay said.

Keep an eye out for random acts of kindness being performed around campus on January 21.

The following day, get your game on in Forwell Hall with We Got Game, a video game/entertainment company that will bring game consoles to campus. Former FSU Prez Zack Dodge will be there with the We Got Game team, helping students chill out and have fun.

“Part of the week focuses on educating on mental illness and mental wellness, and the other part of the week focuses on just relaxing and having a good time,” Gourlay said. “That's what that part of the week is for.”

Take a break from your hectic schedule — have some fun with the FSU.
