Manly bands hit the OBS stage for Movember

New Music Night at The Out Back Shack on Movember 29 is gonna rock your socks off.

“We have three bands coming in for New Music Night — it's a cock rock night,” said Allie Neeb, the Fanshawe Student Union's VP Entertainment.

Local bands The Baxters, Tandem Eagle and The Black Frame Spectacle are closing out the FSU's Movember fundraising initiatives with a “loud, over-the-top, ridiculous and awesome” show, Neeb said.

The Baxters drummer Taylor Lucas said the audience can expect a modern rock 'n' roll show from his band's set. “We have a little bit of a throwback vibe sometimes — a bit of classic rock here and there — but we've been slowly moving toward a more modern sound, with classic shreddin' and '80s rock type stuff.”

He described the band as having vocals similar to Protest the Hero and a sound similar to Thrice and Billy Talent. “It's a weird blend, but it works.”

Though The Baxters haven't hit the stage with Tandem Eagle or The Black Frame Spectacle before, Lucas knows from having seen both bands play that it's going to be a “rippin'” show.

“Tandem Eagle is ballsy, heavy riff-rock — real manly — that's why I think it's hilarious that they're doing the Movember show, because they're probably the most Movember band there is,” he said. “Black Frame's a rippin' two-piece kinda punky (band). You've gotta see those guys to understand them. Their drummer's a crazy clown from hell or something. We called him a caveman last time because he just smacks the piss out of [his kit].”

Ian Sullivan, vocals and guitar for Black Frame Spectacle, laughingly agreed with Lucas' description. “Adam's been compared to Animal from The Muppets, but he is an incredible player. He has this really natural ability that just pours out of him. When you watch him play, it's like watching one of those great drummers like Keith Moon or someone like that, who really just attacks it with everything they've got.”

“It's so energizing to play with someone like that. You might be having one of those days where you don't have as much energy as you would some other days. You get there, and Adam just revs up, and it's like getting hooked on to a car or something — you have to keep up, you can't stop. It's fantastic — he really is the engine.”

All in all, it's going to be a great show. “Bring your dancin' shoes,” said Sullivan. “[The bands are going to be playing] high-energy, high-tempo stuff. We always bring it all on stage. You never get half a show from us — we always make sure that we put everything we have into it, and we usually walk away impressed.”
