Past participants sit in anticipation as the next player takes their game-changing turn.

For the second time this year, the not-for-profit group known as London Family Game Days (LFGD) is getting the community together for a fun-filled day of board games. Taking place at Victoria Public School (130 Wharncliffe Rd. S.) on November 9 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the event is open to all ages at absolutely no cost.

Implemented by a group of savy board game enthusiasts who hope to establish a stronger board gaming community in London, LFGD also has a strong emphasis on sharing a common passion with others in the community.

“The day gives everyone a free opportunity to do something fun without sitting in front of a screen and meet other people,” said Elly Boersma, a main coordinator for the event. “[Video games] are also a fun way to game, but it's not the same. Board games allow you to sit around a table and interact with the people you're playing with; there's a much bigger social aspect to it. And the nice thing about it is it allows all age groups to participate.”

Attendees need not worry about bringing their own games, but are entirely welcomed to do so if they want. Thanks to the LFGD committee, a variety of board games will be available for selection.

“[The coordinators] as well as other on-site support are ready and willing to teach everyone how to play each board game,” said Boersma. “Some of our most popular board games include Ticket to Ride Europe, Settlers of Catan, King of Tokyo.”

With the event even catching the eye of local schools in the area, Boersema highlighted the beneficial effects board games have on the younger crowds.

“Board games create new pathways that [children] might not otherwise develop as quickly. They're also great for social interaction in which they have to learn to wait to take their turn, interact with other players and, of course, play fair!” laughed Boersema.

Those interested in attending LFGD's games day are welcome to check out their Facebook page at: tinyurl.com/LFGD2013. No registration is required. Door prizes will also be up for grabs and will range from exciting and unique board games to gift certificates to local attractions around town.

See you at the tables!
