Fanshawe Fashionista: London stylists show Canada how hair is done right

Anyone serious about working in the fashion, hair and salon industries attended the ABA (Allied Beauty Association) show last weekend at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. This event displayed the countries finest, those who have perfected their field, as this is Canada's largest hair and aesthetic exhibition and educational event.

The festivities began as ‘Dance with the Stars' took centre stage as the opening event and soon to follow local salon, Entrenous, who is no stranger to receiving high acclaim, graciously took home three Mirrors at the 12th Annual Mirror Award ceremonies. Recognized for Ontario's top salon team were Erin Fernandes, Jogoda Hall and Maria Arnos Bikas. Transformation artist of the year as well as the award for best texture went to Erin Fernandes. The ceremonies recognize those from all over the country who continuously prove they are at the head of their game.

Also in the spotlight for daring to try something different was the Artistic Director of Entrenous Hair Salon, Heather Wenman.

At the ABA event, representing L'Oreal Professionnel, Wenman provided education in a way that had never been done before. Wenman was thrilled to be the first to present a crowd-pleasing show featuring all male models on the L'Oreal Professionnel stage, displaying for the first time a novel focus in the hair industry - all men. In bringing men out of the shadows and into the forefront of the industry, 10 outstanding male models' tresses were cut, coloured and styled by Wenman. The audience response was overwhelming as she brought to the ABAs once again a new flavor and flare to the world of hairdressing. With the realization that men are just as fashion/image conscious as women the show's concept, orchestrated by Wenman, gave into the realization that men are an untapped market. Coming out of the woodwork through growing comfort of their image and sexuality, the male market is one that is growing at a rapid pace. Spectators, professionals and demonstrators at the event were saturated with unexpected contradictions of images, ideas and futuristic concepts.

Gearing towards top industry professionals as well as aspiring students, the 2006 ABAs paved the way for growth and innovative ideas in the industry. Londoners should be proud that Canada's top industry professionals with cutting edge trends are simply just a phone call away.
